Preparing to Move: What to Do With Food

Preparing to Move: What to Do With Food

Many times it happens that when you are preparing to move, you choose to finish with the kitchen. So now all your home is properly packed and ready for the professional Canadian movers to pick them up and take them to your new home, but what do you do with food while preparing to move? What do you do with it?

Generally speaking, people have more in their kitchen and pantry than they realize, and packing it all up to take with you can be a chore. An expensive one at that. In fact, it might be cheaper to just start fresh at your new home than to pay the movers to pack all those heavy boxes filled with canned food.

The simple solution to your food problem when preparing to move is to get rid of it one way or another before you move.

Here are the steps you can take to do exactly that:

Assess what you have

The first step to tackling any problem is to understand just how big of one it really is. With that in mind, grab a notebook and a pen and start making out an inventory. Make note of what is in your fridge, cupboards, freezers, and pantry.

Break the list down into:

  • Perishables- Things in the fridge and freezer
  • Non-perishables- cereal, snacks, bottled drinks, and chips
  • Canned goods- soup, vegetables, fruit, beans, etc.
  • Baking/cooking supplies- flour, sugar, dried pasta
  • Glass bottled items- sauces, oils, dressings, alcohol

On your list, write down the expiration date of each food as well as how much longer exactly it will be good for.

Make a plan

Now that you know what you have and how long it will be good for you need to figure out what to do with it all. The next step in preparing to move is to mark the foods that will be expiring soonest and work them into your meal plans before you move.

Take some time to determine what you can get eaten before the move, what you can donate to the food bank, and what should just go in the garbage.

The goal is to lessen the load on the movers. The faster you can move, the cheaper the cost, so keep that in mind when it comes to dealing with food.

Pack up what you are taking with you

Chances are good that you will still want to take at least some food with you to your new home. If so, here are some important moving tips for you to remember when preparing to move:

  • Use small to medium-sized boxes as food can get heavy fast. This can get messy if the box breaks and sends food spilling out onto the floor or ground.
  • Make use of Ziploc bags to prevent leaks and spills in the boxes. This way if anything does leak, it won’t get all over the entire box. Plastic containers from the dollar store can work too but that will be more costly and heavy.
  • Use bubble wrap or at least newspaper to wrap glass bottles.
  • Label each box carefully so you know exactly what needs to be put in the fridge or freezer right away.
